Abstract:

Although the field of Family businesses has been regarded as a separate academic discipline since the 1990s in the world, in Iran no particular study has been done in this field. Furthermore, growth of firms is very important in the firm's survival. We investigated and explained the factors affecting growth and development of Family businesses in Tehran.Almost 78 Family businesses in textile industry and 80 Family businesses in oil industry were identified. A sample of 88 firms from two industries was examined in our study. Findings show that there are correlations between growth and independent factors such as risk taking of owner managers, orientation to innovation, skills related to management, people interest to participate in their Family business, strategic insight of Family members, political environment, cultural environment and economical environment, and there is no correlation between growth and the governance of Family on their business.

Abstract:

The purpose of this article is to identify the internationalization indicators of Family businesses. For this purpose, a two-stage qualitative research method including focus group and three-stage Delphi technique was used. The target population consisted of 10 experts with knowledge and experience on the topic of research who were purposefully selected based on snowball sampling method. Data collection tools included semi-structured interviews in focus groups and a questionnaire designed according to the findings of the first stage. By using the MAXQDA software, the collected data were coding, identified and summarized by performing open and axial coding of indicators. Then, using Delphi technique, the indicators were finally approved by experts and in the next step, using selective coding, the final model framework was formed. Based on the results, 11 components and 64 indicators were identified after the end of the third round of Delphi. According to the average obtained from the Delphi triple stages, the most important indicators are the cheap and abundant raw materials, the education of the company's employees in fields related to business and internal competition, and the use of knowledge and experience of competing companies. Also among the least importance were the indicators of long-term investment, diversity in the production of products, and the study of samples of successful products in potential target markets.

Abstract:

This study investigates the relationship between Family ownership, board composition, and the performance of Family businesses, with a focus on unlisted Family enterprises. While much attention has been given to studies on listed Family firms versus non-Family firms, unlisted Family businesses play a significant role in economies worldwide. The research used the PRISMA statement 2020 to select relevant articles and employed VOS viewer software for data analysis. The results reveal four significant research areas: interlocking directorates, Family ownership, board composition, and performance of unlisted firms. Interlocking directors positively influence the performance of unlisted Family firms, and the presence of knowledgeable board directors positively impacts strategic planning decisions. Notably, differences arise between Family firms led by the first generation and those by subsequent generations. Independents and affiliates on the board enhance performance when the first generation runs the firm. The findings provide new insights into the role of board directors in the corporate governance of unlisted Family businesses.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to explain and identify the components affecting the sustainability of human resources in Family businesses. The present research is mixed in terms of development-applied purpose, in terms of exploratory nature and in terms of data collection. The statistical sample of the qualitative stage includes 18 managers and founders of Family businesses with a history of more than 30 years in the provinces of Kermanshah, Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan. The statistical population consists of a small number of 864 entrepreneurs and small and medium business managers located in the industrial towns of West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and Kermanshah provinces, from which 200 people were selected by simple random sampling. The data collection tool is a semi-structured interview in the qualitative stage and a questionnaire extracted from the qualitative model in the quantitative stage. For qualitative data analysis, Brown and Clark (2006) six-step content analysis method and MAXQDA10 software and for quantitative data analysis, structural equation modeling method and SmartPLS software were used. The results showed that, among the identified components affecting the sustainability of human resources in Family businesses, the components of maintaining Family integrity, Family organizational culture and balanced systems between work and life had the most impact.

Abstract:

Objective Sustainability has gained significant attention across various domains in recent decades, including the media, institutions, and national and international policymaking organizations. Concurrently, corporate social responsibility (CSR) literature has experienced rapid expansion, particularly about Family businesses—entities distinguished by unique characteristics that differentiate them from other private organizations. This growth has created diverse and compelling research avenues at the intersection of sustainability and CSR. This study employs a bibliometric analysis to examine previous research on CSR in Family businesses and its integration with sustainability, aiming to consolidate fragmented studies across industries while addressing gaps in the implementation of dispersed CSR practices among Family enterprises.   Methods The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques through Bibliometric analysis, utilizing the ADO-TCM framework (Antecedents, Decisions, Outcomes – Theory, Context, Methods). For the scientometric analysis, we extracted data from Scopus (1990–2023), the most comprehensive and reliable database for scientometric research. From an initial pool of 592 identified articles, 120 were selected for preliminary analysis using VOSviewer software. Following Aiden et al.’s (2017) model, we implemented a four-stage screening process: (a) identification and extraction of relevant articles, (b) title and abstract screening, (c) full-text review of introductions and results, and (d) final evaluation based on research objectives, yielding 36 core articles.   Results Results indicate a substantial growth in CSR research focusing on Family businesses since 2010. While early studies originated primarily in Western Europe and North America, the current research epicenter has shifted toward Asia, particularly to emerging and advanced economies like China. Quantitative methods dominate the field (accounting for 78% of studies), with regression analysis being particularly prevalent.   Conclusion Our researcher-developed model, based on the secondary screening of the 36 articles, reveals that antecedents primarily concern CSR, sustainable development, SDGs, ethics, and socio-economic-cultural factors. Strategic decisions predominantly involve long-term corporate strategies and board-level decisions focusing on earnings management, ownership structure, environmental disclosure, downsizing, workforce reduction, gender diversity, and investment. These interventions aim to enhance sustainability disclosure transparency, promote responsible approaches, and align investments with sustainability, which represents a key recent trend. The study highlights significant contributions from Family businesses across Asian (e.g., China, South Korea, Russia, Turkey), European (e.g., Lithuania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland), and American (particularly the United States) contexts. The research integrates multiple theoretical perspectives, including Socioemotional Wealth Theory, Stakeholder Theory, Institutional Theory, Resource-Based View, Neo-Institutional Theory, Stewardship Theory, Agency Theory, Goal Systems Theory, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Signaling Theory.
